No Vocal Cords. No Excuses. Only Impact
In 2019, on what seemed like an ordinary Monday morning, I received a call that would alter the course of my journey. A senior official from the World Health Organization invited me to meet Dr. Jayanti Ravi, IAS, then Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Health in Gujarat.
When I stepped into her office, carrying a book titled -10/10: Immersive Narratives of 10 Cancer Winners, where my own story, I Am Here to Stay,” featured as the opening chapter, her first words took me by surprise:
“Shrenik bhai, I know of your spectacular work. I’ve been following it closely.”
Her schedule was packed, and instead of a sit-down meeting, she invited me into her official car. It was during that brief ride that she made a proposal that would change my life forever. “Every Friday at 4 PM, we run a live show on the Vande Gujarat State News Channel. I want you to moderate a segment on cancer awareness. Invite leading specialists. Talk about early detection and treatment. Let’s reach the people who need this the most.”
It was Monday.
By Friday, we were live.
In just four days, I had managed to coordinate with oncologists, radiation experts, pediatric specialists, and breast cancer surgeons. Together, we went on air for a two-hour broadcast that wasn’t just about medicine, it was about survival, resilience, and hope.
The impact went far beyond what I imagined:
25,000 health workers across Gujarat tuned in.
Each was responsible for 1,000 individuals in their communities.
That meant nearly 25 million lives were touched at the grassroots level.
For someone like me, who lost his natural voice to cancer, the irony was not lost. That day, I discovered a new voice. Not one bound by vocal cords, but one amplified by purpose, carrying a message of awareness and survival to millions.
Perhaps, somewhere in the records, this remains one of the first instances of a global cancer survivor moderating a state-run live telecast on cancer awareness at such a scale. But behind the scenes, the journey was anything but easy. It was a story of fierce struggles, fanatical determination and relentless innovation, finding ways to create impact without vocal cords.
And it became clear to me that sometimes, purpose can give you more power than any microphone ever can.
Today, as a Global Goodwill Ambassador, leadership coach, patient advocate, and host of Fridays with Shrenik, I remain committed to amplifying the cause of cancer awareness and patient empowerment. If my journey proves anything, it’s this: you don’t need a perfect voice to make yourself heard. You just need purpose.
