INDIA: Summit on
The upcoming International Patient Summit (IPS) on Health, Climate, and Community will bring together diverse stakeholders to tackle the urgent challenges posed by climate change, health disparities, and overburdened healthcare systems.
Under the theme "Health, Climate, Community: Uniting Stakeholders for Action," the event emphasizes the inclusion of patient voices in co-designing and implementing strategies to address these pressing issues.
Building on the principles of equity and inclusion introduced in the first IPS, this summit stresses the vital role of community engagement and patient involvement. Climate change has worsened existing health disparities, increasing chronic conditions, food insecurity, and environmental health risks. Between 2018 and 2022, people globally endured an average of 86 days of dangerously high temperatures each year, and 127 million more individuals faced severe food insecurity in 2021 compared to 1981. Air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths globally in 2021, making it the second leading risk factor for death worldwide.
The summit will explore the long-term health effects of climate change, which is expected to cause an additional 250,000 deaths annually between 2030 and 2050 due to undernutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress. Despite global efforts, the pace of action remains insufficient to curb these risks. In response, the summit will showcase innovative healthcare solutions like digital health and point-of-care services that can improve healthcare accessibility, especially in underserved areas.
In addition to addressing these challenges, the summit is also an important opportunity for the patient movement in the Asia-Pacific region to unite. IPS 2 provides a platform to bring together around 150 patient advocates in person and several more online to share their insights, experiences, and best practices on climate-triggered illnesses in the region. This is also a chance for PAIR (Patient Academy for Innovation and Research) to promote its mission of building patient-centered healthcare across the Asia-Pacific region, fostering the formation of national patient group alliances.
